A backup you have never restored is not a backup
Almost every company has backups. Far fewer have ever actually tried restoring one.
The question is not "do you have backups" but "when did you last restore one onto an empty machine and check the data". If the answer is never, the backup is still only a hope.
Common failures: a backup file that has been empty for months without anyone noticing, a backup stored on the same server as its source, and a backup that restores fine but takes far longer than the business can afford.
A scheduled monthly restore test with recorded results turns backups from a hope into a certainty. It is also the only way to learn how long a restore takes before you actually need it.
